D-Aspartic acid – Benefits, Side-Effects, Dosage

D-Aspartic Acid is an individual existing molecule which is present in human and animal tissues and is especially present in hormone and nerve tissues. Everything humans know about the effects of D-Aspartic Acid has been found out from multiple animal research.

D-Aspartic Acid is extremely essential for the development and growth of humans because they help in development of the brain and nerves and also play a vital role in nerve communications.

It also helps in the production and regulation of various hormones in our body. Scientists are still studying other possible effects which D-Aspartic Acid might have on our body.

However, the consumption of D-Aspartic Acid supplements are still not approved for human consumption and medical usage by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) of the United States of America. This ban is because these dietary supplements have still not been studied thoroughly and there is no clinical research work yet. 

There are some regulations which need to be followed during the production of D-Aspartic Acid supplements including testosterone boosters but these regulations still cannot guarantee the safety and effectiveness of this supplement. And this is why it is highly recommended that one should always consult their doctor before starting the consumption of D-Aspartic Acid supplements.

Aspartic Acid is a type of Amino Acid and these amino acids are also known as the building blocks of protein buildup in the Human Body. 

Aspartic Acid is very important for the development and growth of the Human body and it helps in reducing the feeling of dizziness and tiredness, it also boosts the athletic and physical performance of individuals, and it also increases the size of muscles in the body and helps in their growth.

Aspartic Acid is relatively safe for human consumption when consumed orally but there is not enough evidence to prove the long term effects of Aspartic Acid on your body. However, Aspartic acid is considered relatively unsafe for women who are pregnant and are also breastfeeding.

 It is also considered unsafe for consumption by children and infants, because Aspartic Acid might lead to brain defects and abnormalities in unborn babies while in their mother’s womb.

There are two possible forms of Aspartic Acid namely: L-Aspartic Acid and D-Aspartic Acid.

L-Aspartic Acid is known to combine with other amino acids present in our body to form the proteins which are the building blocks of our body. Thus L-Aspartic Acid is very vital for human growth, development and survival.

In humans, D-Aspartic Acid exists freely and individually as small molecules and marks its presence in multiple human and animal cells and tissues.

Individually, both L-Aspartic Acid and D-Aspartic Acid are made from the same molecule and atom and they even have the same formula (C4H7NO4). In fact the positioning of atoms and the structure of these compounds are identical and they differ only in their alignment.

Both of these compounds are mirror images of each other and the reason why both these compounds have chemical properties differing from each other is because of this mirror effect.

D-Aspartic Acid is a type or form of Aspartic Acid and the former resembles a lot to the later in terms of characteristics and composition.

D-Aspartic Acid has been studied through various animal researches. In a research conducted on mice, it was found that Higher levels of D-Aspartic Acid promotes the development and growth of the brain of mice both before and after its birth. 

These high levels of D-Aspartic Acid decrease with time but D-Aspartic Acid still continues to help in the development of nerves which helps in creating an environment of awareness around the mice in its adult stage.

Scientists also consider D-Aspartic Acid to be a Neurotransmitter which helps in the production and enhancement of the nerve signals. It also helps in the stimulation of recently developed brain connections and store memories in mice and it also speeds up the process of learning in these animals.

Aspartic Acid which is produced naturally in our body is quite essential for the development of our brain. But there can be some ill effects of supplementing D-Aspartic Acid. In the study conducted on mice it was found that exceedingly higher levels of D-Aspartic Acid led to learning and brain disorders. 

These amino acids were also found to damage Hypothalamus, which is a very important part of the brain because Hypothalamus is responsible for maintaining the balance of Hormones in our body. It also caused damage to a portion of the brain’s limbic system which is responsible for controlling emotions.

D-Aspartic acid has also been found to be involved in the development of muscles, sexual reproduction and functions, and regulating the blood pressure in the studied mice. D-Aspartic acid manages to perform all these functions by stimulating the production of hormones like Testosterone and other hormones responsible for growth..

There are a lot of benefits which are believed to be associated with the D-Aspartic acid. However these benefits have yet not been backed by any scientific studies and they are just based on beliefs.

  1. Increasing the level of Testosterone in human body​

    There are many sources which claim that supplements which contain D-Aspartic acid are responsible for boosting the levels of testosterone in our body.

    Many animal studies have proved that D-Aspartic acid boosts the testosterone levels in the male subject being studied. However, the same is yet to be proved in humans.

    A study was done on 23 men who were administered 3.12 grams of D-Aspartic Acid everyday for a period of 12 days. All these men had low initial testosterone levels and did no exercise during this period. Still these men were absolutely healthy and had an increased level of testosterone.

  1. Might Improve Sperm Quality

    There are many supplement manufacturing companies which claim that D-Aspartic acid is very efficient in increasing the sperm count and quality in human males. This claim has been studied and proved to be true in various animals but the same is still not proved for Humans.

    Some large scale research and studies have to be conducted in the upcoming future to back this claim.

    When humans grow up and they age, the levels of D-Aspartic Acid produced naturally in the human body increases. This increase is much more evident in some organs and parts like bones, teeth, eyes and the human brain.

    This increase is a result of the conversion of L-Aspartic Acid to D-Aspartic Acid in the human body and such changes are used to study the process of aging in humans. However, scientists have still not been able to understand the full effects of D-Aspartic Acid on aging and scientists still need to conduct some more research to find out about the anti-aging properties of D-Aspartic Acid.

Recommended Dosage

The dosage of D-Aspartic Acid ranges from individuals to individuals and most of the D-Aspartic Supplement manufacturers recommend the dosage to be around 3 grams per day. However, it is recommended that the dosage amount of D-Aspartic Acid should never exceed more than 6 grams because the side effects of consuming it more than 6 grams are still not studied and known properly.

However, one should always consult their doctor before starting the use of D-Aspartic Acid for the best and safest results.

D-Aspartic Acid- Side Effects

D-Aspartic Acid is considered safe when it is administered orally or when consumed naturally in foods. There are still no known side effects which might be related to the use of D-Aspartic Acid supplements and scientists still need some time and research to study the side effects.

However, Pregnant women and Breastfeeding women are advised to stay away from the use of D-Aspartic acid because D-Aspartic Acid might lead to some abnormalities and brain defects in the unborn children while they are still in their mother’s womb.

D-Aspartic acid is also known to cause brain defects in animals when they were administered with it during the research. This is why it is not recommended to administer D-Aspartic Acid to children because they might suffer from brain defects too.
